I set up this blog because I needed an outlet and forum to express ideas that might not merit publication in serious peer reviewed journals. There are three reasons why these ideas might not pass peer review. The most obvious reason is that the ideas expressed are simply confused and/or ill informed. Hence the "Confusions" in the title of the blog. By expressing ideas that I am confused about I am hoping that there is someone out there in cyberspace who can set me straight and clear up my confusions. If this works out I can save myself the embarrassment of having a published paper that I must later repudiate completely.
Secondly, I want to be able to simply pose problems without the burden of having to solve them. In peer reviewed journals when you pose problems there is some expectation that you can at least provide some outline of a potential solution. Hence, the "Conundrums" in the title to the blog. Most of the time when I get stumped I have no clue as to how to get "unstumped". Here again the hope is that someone in cyber space will come along and shed some light on the problem that has escaped my notice.
Finally, peer reviewed journals tend to be pretty stuffy and self referential. In this blog I want to be able to be less formal and certainly less self referential. I also want to be able to kvetch a little bit. Hence, the "Complaints" in the title.
Hopefully I will find some sympathetic help out there, and who knows maybe some serious and useful ideas that can pass peer review will come out of these postings.
